I've used this method with a standard pressure washer, minus the ginormous vacuum, to dig a couple of trenches. Works surprisingly well... if you don't mind getting hideously dirty in the process. 馃槄

Hey I used to do this at a refinery. Here's my truck I operated. The ripsaw tip could cut compacted dirt, roadbase, and even thigh asphalt.

Cool! 20 years ago I started using a power sprayer (with red tip) to cut all of my lines through lawns for my lighting business. Amazing! We've never cut/damaged one pet fence or irrigation line, & 48 hours after, it's hard to even see line through the lawn, zero repair/reseeding!
